Looking East down the Ahuriri the first light of the day starts to filter down the cool valley. Mid summer the snow is nowhere to be seen. The Ahuriri river meanders and braids its way through the ochre and umber hues of the landscape. Its headwaters on the eastern flanks of the Southern Alps. The conservation park is well know for its fly fishing (both brown and rainbow), hunting and tramping.

The notable Ahuriri clay cliffs are located on the North bank of the river close to the town of Omarama, New Zealand.
