I was presented with this scene up near the head of the Wilkin Valley, the first evening in an 18 day transalpine tramping expedition I was undertaking in the Mt Aspiring National Park.
This painting is part of the series of work I am doing, capturing the diverse valley systems of New Zealand.
The light and colours in this scene particularly attracted me to relive this experience through my painting. Broad brush flourishes capturing the underlying energy of the landscape, each brush stoke conveying the different characteristics of the subject.
