Mt Burns located off the Borland Saddle Road, is the area that inspired me to paint this work. Recently visited by the participating members of the Godzone 2023 Adventure Race as part of their route.
I spent a weekend in this stunning area, camped up high next to the alpine tarns waiting for the first rays of the morning sun to bring the landscape to life.
The Fiordland mountains stretched as far as the eye could see. The tarns sat peacefully as not a breath of wind was present to unsettle them.
The ochre and brown hues of the alpine tussocks glowed in the morning sun.
After capturing this scene through my experience of the place and by taking photos, I brought these resources back to my studio. From there I was able to relive the moment and recreate that experience through my painting for others to see.
The large scale work captures the grand scale of this place and immerses you into that environment, so unique to New Zealand.
