The Hopkins Valley sits behind lake Ohau, gradually leading its way into the main divide. The main divide is where the characteristic wet and rainy weather from the West Coast crosses over to the East Coast. The head waters of the Hopkins Valley are often changing in between the weather.
As I made my way up the Valley (early morning) I had to navigate the new and old tracks that had been destroyed and recreated by the river. Rocky terraces had been sculpted by the power of the water. Steep snowy peaks pushed up either side of the valley. It was the end of winter and the river gently meandered down the flats awaiting the heavy spring rain.
